Description
Intermediate Type: Haiku, Saturday, July 26, 10:00am – 12:00pm
Join us for an engaging intermediate letterpress class at Reflex Letterpress, where you’ll dive deeper into the art of typesetting and printing. In this hands-on workshop, attendees will explore page layout, type selection, and the Japanese art of haiku, and print their creations on their choice of handmade sheets of paper sourced from recycled letterpress offcuts.
What to Expect:
- Text Selection: The Japanese poetic art of haiku has a deep and resonant history and a fascinating process of pulling beauty out of restriction. With a pattern of five-seven-five syllables, the composer must edit and evoke with very little text. Will you select a verse from one of the masters? Or will you compose your own philosophical musing?
- Type Choice: The master poets range the gamut from poignant to funny to sublime to frightening. There’s a typeface available for all of these responses, plus more. What will your choice be?
- Putting It On The Page: Process Papers, a brand of Reflex Letterpress, creates handmade sheets out of production offcuts, in a range of colors, from bright to subtle. This is the canvas for your creation. How will you use the 5×7 size restriction for your poem? Where will the type rest on the textured sheet? How will the type interact with the organic deckle edge of the paper?
This intermediate class is perfect for those who have some prior experience with letterpress and are looking to enhance their skills further. Whether you’re a designer, artist, or printing enthusiast, this workshop offers valuable insights and techniques to elevate your letterpress projects.
